40 Days: 27) Mercy, mercy me

Through the Lord ’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” (Lamentations 3:22-24 NKJV)

Whether we know it or not, here’s no doubt that we are all in need of the mercy of God. It would seem though that many are oblivious to the need of mercy that has been made available to us thorough the cross of Jesus Christ. The cross appears as more of a decorative figure that one might put on an ornamental piece of jewellery. Nothing more. Some who see the cross this way would say, or even wear the cross as a reminder of how much God loves them. But in all reality – do we realise, not just how much he loves us, but also how NECESSARY that merciful love is for our existence.

I’ve heard that this ignorant existence being likened to a man who has received the new from a doctor friend that he has the cure for cancer:

“That’s great!” says the man.
“Yes isn’t it? And it’s all yours” says the doctor.
“But what use would I have for it, I’m healthy? I don’t have cancer – that might be good for someone who has the sickness. But me? I’m good…”

The Bible is clear throughout – we are horrendously fallen in our sin state. All of us (Romans 3:23)! When we come to the realisation of just how desperately we need this mercy found for us in the cross of Jesus, we can also see even deeper how much God loves us. To bridge an eternal chasm between us and God because of His love for us is the greatest love we could ever experience.

discussion/application question: have you experienced this love and mercy? If you have then what’s it like? If not then would you like to? Drop me a message & ill show you how you can…
