Engaging Culture – Daniel style

I was really blessed today meeting up with the Kree8 collective as we chatted about being used by God to shape culture within our “guild” (man this word is quickly becoming a favourite of mine these days). My man Arnie Manzano shared a few thoughts from the message I spoke at Every Nation Singapore on Sunday about engaging culture and actually picked up where I left off – in the book of Daniel. (You can check out Arnie’s blog right here) Here were some of my gleanings from his thoughts which I found helpful:

A is for Ability – Daniel 1:4 (Daniel, Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego were…) young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.

Daniel and his friends were at the top of their game, and spent time learning, and understanding the culture, developing in their abilities, in order to operate with excellence…

B is for Bravery (Boldness) – Daniel 2:5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble.”

Knowing that this was the case, Daniel saw this as an opportunity and seized it – braving the possibility of execution, he leaned into his God, and with boldness approached King Nebuchadnezzar:

vs 27 and 28 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.”

C is for Confidence (Conviction) – Daniels steadfast confidence in His God prompted this response from King Nebuchadnezzar:

vs 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.”

Have you seized every opportunity with confidence and bravery – ready to use your abilities to shape culture and change societal atmosphere and climate for the glory of King Jesus?

There’s a lot more that we could take from Daniel to emphasize these 3 points, and believe me this is just the surface. We haven’t even talked about Lions Dens and Fiery Furnaces… Any thoughts?
