I wanna live forever… (from the dole to owning DOLE)

I just saw an interview that Oprah Winfrey did with Dole vegetable tycoon, David Murdock. According to the interview, after his stint in World War 2, he was left homeless. A kind man, who he calls his good Samaritan, lent him $1200 to purchase a diner. He turned it over for a marginal profit of $700. This was the first in many successful business transactions and acquisitions, the most notable being turning Castel and Cooke, (which owned Dole: as in the pineapple company) from being on the verge of bankruptcy, to being the largest fruit and vegetable company in the world. He also happens to own almost all of the island of Lanai, Hawaii, and is now one of the richest men in the US.

But that’s not what’s most fascinating to me…

It wasn’t all these feats that fascinated me as much as the fact that he is 85 years old and as fit as a fiddle. His secret? An hour of cardio, a regime of weight training, and a large diet of fruits and vegetables, with the only meat being primarily fish in the evenings. Mr Murdock plans to be around for another 40 years, clocking in an innings of 125 years. With the way things looked, he was right on the money in more ways than one.
